A thoughtful 7-day Kashmir itinerary for first-time visitors
Seven days is enough to see the valley's classic landscapes without turning every morning into a checkout. This route protects the pace of the trip.

A week in Kashmir should feel expansive, not hurried. The common mistake is to treat every famous place as a hotel stop. In practice, Srinagar works well as a base for several excursions, while Pahalgam deserves enough time to settle into its riverside pace.
This seven-day route is designed for first-time visitors arriving and departing through Srinagar. It balances the classic circuit with sensible transfers and leaves space for weather, tea stops and unplanned views.

Route at a glance
Spend three nights in Srinagar, two in Pahalgam and the final night on or beside Dal Lake. Gulmarg and Sonamarg can be planned as day excursions from Srinagar, avoiding two extra hotel changes.
- Days 1–3: Srinagar base with local sightseeing and Sonamarg
- Day 4: Gulmarg day excursion
- Days 5–6: Pahalgam and its surrounding valleys
- Day 7: Srinagar departure, adjusted to your flight time

Days 1–2: arrive gently and understand Srinagar
Keep arrival day deliberately light. After the airport transfer, settle in and take a shikara ride when the light softens. A rushed list of gardens immediately after a flight rarely improves the trip.
Use the second day for Srinagar's Mughal gardens, Hazratbal and a part of the old city or a craft neighbourhood. The aim is not simply to tick landmarks but to understand the water, gardens, food and handmade traditions that anchor the valley.

Days 3–4: Sonamarg and Gulmarg from one base
Take Sonamarg and Gulmarg on separate days. Both are substantial mountain drives in different directions, and combining either with a long transfer makes the day unnecessarily tiring. Seasonal access, activity options and local transport arrangements should be checked in advance.
At Gulmarg, decide before arrival whether the Gondola is important to you and reserve official tickets when available. At Sonamarg, let road status and local conditions determine how far you explore beyond the main valley.

Days 5–6: slow down in Pahalgam
Travel to Pahalgam via Pampore and the countryside south of Srinagar. Two nights here allow one unstructured riverside afternoon and one day for local valley sightseeing, subject to the transport system operating at the time.
Choose Aru, Betaab Valley or another nearby experience according to the season and your group. Families may enjoy a gentler combination, while couples and keen walkers can allow more time in Aru. Avoid squeezing every local valley into one day merely because they appear close on a map.

Day 7: return with margin
If your flight is early, return to Srinagar on day six and stay close enough for a calm airport transfer. With a later departure, travel back on day seven but leave generous time for traffic and security procedures.
For an eight-day journey, add a second slow day in Srinagar or Pahalgam rather than another distant destination. More places do not automatically create a richer trip.
Keep these in mind
Key takeaways
- Use Srinagar as a base instead of changing hotels every day.
- Give Pahalgam two nights so it feels different from a day excursion.
- Check mountain access, ticketing and local transport before travel.
- Plan airport transfers with a generous buffer.
